As the leaves start to turn and there’s a crispness in the air, autumn is a perfect time to get outdoors and explore the local countryside. Whether you’re after a brisk Sunday stroll or a scenic weekend walk finished off with a cosy pub lunch, Darlington and its surrounding areas offer plenty of picture-perfect options.

1. West Park to Broken Scar

Right on the doorstep of West Park Garden Village, this route takes in the West Park nature trails before heading along the River Skerne towards Broken Scar. It’s ideal for a short, peaceful walk with changing leaves, open skies, and glimpses of the Teesdale countryside. Make sure to stop at the Tees Cottage Pumping Station if it’s open — a quirky slice of local history.

Cosy stop-off: Try The Brinkburn on Carmel Road for a coffee or a pint afterwards.

2. South Park & The River Skerne Loop

Darlington’s historic South Park is always worth a visit, but it really comes into its own in autumn. The mature trees, bandstand, and river walk are bursting with colour at this time of year. Start at the main gates, follow the river path, and loop back for a gentle, family-friendly route.

Cosy stop-off: South Park Café for a warm drink or treat.

3. High Force and Low Force, Teesdale

A little further afield but well worth the drive, this circular walk takes you through the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The roar of High Force waterfall surrounded by golden trees is a true autumn highlight. The loop from Bowlees Visitor Centre is well signposted and suits most abilities.

Cosy stop-off: The High Force Hotel serves comforting pub classics with a view.

4. Piercebridge to Gainford

This walk blends riverside beauty with charming village vibes. Follow the River Tees from the Roman village of Piercebridge to Gainford and enjoy the changing leaves along the way. It’s about 3 miles each way, and you can return the same route or loop through quiet lanes.

Cosy stop-off: The George Hotel in Piercebridge or The Cross Keys in Gainford for a well-earned pint or Sunday lunch.

Tips for Autumn Walks

  • Wear waterproof shoes or boots – it can get muddy underfoot.

  • Pack layers – autumn weather is famously unpredictable.

  • Take a flask – a hot chocolate or coffee always tastes better on a walk.

  • Don’t forget your phone or camera – you’ll want to capture the views!

Whether you’re exploring a hidden trail or soaking up the views from a riverside pub, autumn is a magical time to enjoy the outdoors around Darlington. Wrap up warm, get outside, and make the most of the season.
