GreenLeaf Award

Date: 01/05/2004

Bussey and Armstrong Homes win regional award for environmental excellence.

Darlington-based developers Bussey and Armstrong Homes have been awarded the North East winner of the 2003 ‘GreenLeaf’ award. The award was given for their Woodlands Estate in the west-end of the town.

The prestigious GreenLeaf Awards, launched in 1987, are organised by the Daily Mail in partnership with the New Homes Marketing Board, and aim to recognise the very best in new housing landscapes. The competition is open to all UK house builders, although developments must have been completed for a minimum of three years become they become eligible for judging to ensure that the developers’ initial efforts are not simply cosmetic.

The awards were presented at the Daily Mail offices in Kensington on 14th May, and recognise the importance house builders place on the creation of a whole living environment and not just building new homes.

Bussey and Armstrong’s overall objective for the scheme was to preserve the ‘Country Estate’ feel for the development, with the new housing and landscaping reflecting the original style of the mansion (now the Darlington Hospice), and at the same time integrating the development with the existing trees and listed building. In addition to the housing and landscaping proposals Bussey & Armstrong implemented an arts strategy for the development incorporating metal work to roof finals in the style of tree species, estate railings and decorative fencing at the Gatehouse entrance.

This success follows the 2001 RIBA Northern Region Hadrian award for architectural design in larger developments, which was awarded to the scheme.
