About Darlington

Darlington is a market town at the gateway to the Tees Valley. Home to the first public railway, Darlington is steeped in history and boasts one of the oldest railway stations in the world which still to this day houses George Stephenson’s Locomotion Number One.

With sixteen parks in and around Darlington, it has more green spaces than any other urban area of its size in the North East of England.

Darlington’s Victorian Town Centre has all the usual high street retailers together with a wide selection of independent shops and an outstanding award winning market. Regular speciality markets are held including Farmers’, Crafts & Continental Markets and a Food Festival. Numerous restaurants and bars are also dotted around the town centre and the Civic Theatre featuring many high profile stars from stage and screen.

Darlington also has its own commercial area which is rapidly expanding and acting as a magnet to large companies such as Orange, Capita, Amec, Student Loans Company & Cummins

One of Darlington’s major assets is its strategic location. Situated on the regional and national communications networks, the north/south A1 motorway links Scotland and the North East with the rest of England and the East/West A66 trunk road links the Tees Valley with the M6 and the North West.
